It's Vintage Thingies Thursday over at Coloradolady and Thrifty Thursday at Leigh's.
I only have one small treasure to share this week.
When my paternal grandma went into a nursing home, her few possessions were of course given to her descendants. My aunt got grandma's glasses and her case. I loved them, so I started looking in antique shops for a little pair of my own.
I found these. My friend Deven tells me they are called pince-nez. They were worn by pinching them onto the nose. A cord could be run through the hole in the little tab on the left so they could hang around your neck until needed.
Pretty cool, huh?

Somewhere, I think I have some of my mother's old glasses from the 1950s. They have wire frames. Originally they had different colored plastic pieces that could be snapped on the tops to change the look or to match different outfits. The plastic pieces got lost long ago, however.
I think they're called pince-nez. They're super cool. :)

PS - I think they were usually tied onto a cord.

Maybe that is what I needed! My students used to make fun of the way my glasses were always on the end of my nose...or else I would lay them down and forget where I put them!
Those are so unique - great find! That term is probably correct because nez is French for nose, and pince sounds like pinch. (Ain't I smart?)
These are really cute and what a great case as well. I have to agree, that I don't know how they kept these on, I would have lost them I am sure!! Have a great VTT.

The lady would not be super active when using them. Glasses were not an inexpensive item so you took great care of them! :) Happy VTT!

I did try them on, and they AREN'T easy to keep in place. I've seen pictures/movies of people using them and they have a long straight handle coming down from the little tab so they can hold them in place. I'm guessing they only held them up to their eyes when they really needed them.
I have my paternal grandfather's eyeglasses. They do have the temple bars, but are the same style as far as the wire rims, etc.
Wow, these would be hard to keep on your face! And I think I have a hard time now!!!!

So...if'n you can't wear 'em, what do you DO with them? At my house they would end up as a teddy bear accessory.
I've done that several times, look for sentimental items at the antique shop and have one LIKE the one your loved one had. What a great find!

Really great find. I vaguely remember my great grandmother having her glasses on a pretty silver chain, but I'm not sure if they were like those or not.
