Many of you have asked where in the world I've been.

All I know is that after 7 plus years of blogging and a different lappy, which I don’t like, I seem to have lost my blogging fervor.

Someday, when you least expect it, I will post again.

For those of you still waiting I say thank you.

Meanwhile, I am rather prolific on twitter. Find me: @KeethaB

Wherein the Students are Happy But the Teachers are Down Right Giddy!!!

.

It's THAT time again!!!! Vintage Thingies Thursday over at Coloradolady and Thrifty Thursday at Bloggeritaville.

In honor of the fact that TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL for this year, I'm sharing these old music class books.

But before I do that, let me just reassure you that we teachers are thrilled to the soles of our feet to be FREE, FREE AT LAST!!!! (Go ahead, sing with me!)

A while back at some family gathering or other, these little school books were up for grabs, so I GRABBED.

Because, people, I REMEMBER the day we used books like these several times a week at school. I don't think I ever had the chance to KEEP mine, they were turned in at the end of the school year just like any other book.

Evidently some students had to purchase their own music books. The two solid blue ones belonged to my uncle Chuck, my dad's brother-in-law. So, they're older than I am - - - by A LOT!!! Were he still living, Uncle Chuck would be past 90.

The other two were evidently passed down amongst my cousins. These obviously belonged to my cousin, whom I affectionately call Albert Elmer, (another story - - - another post) and he apparently had to share them with:

His little sister, Ruthie. Ruthie is my age - - - we're just young little things. ;-)

I don't know how THEY used these books at school, but I remember in northern Wisconsin we used to have a radio program called "Let's Sing." It came on several times a week and the teacher tuned it in and we - - - - - you guessed it - - - - we SANG.

I'm still singin' - - - - this time it's "School's Out for the Summer!"

Aside: Hubby had to tell me whose song that was, if you'd have asked me I'd have said I didn't care for Alice Cooper - - - but I guess I DO LIKE THIS ONE!!!!

I was just thinking that you must not be out of school yet cuz we hadn't heard the "Hallelujah" - and lo and behold it has now been heard! Just wondering if it's the last last day or is the jury still out?

I miss the last day of school feeling !

hey girl! love your books! I am SUCH a bookworm myself and I would have SO much fun reading them!

Keetha said...

Pam, I always post these "Thursday" posts on Wednesday night to get in the FRONT of the Mr. Linky line - - - my last day is really tomorrow. The jury is still OUT on the rest - - - no need to decide until they make an offer.

Amy - - - are you "my" Amy S with a new avatar, or are you a NEW Amy with an OLD avatar???? Hehehehehehe

I like old schoolbooks though I don't have any myself. I had forgotten about the music books we used in grade school. Unfortunately, I never could sing so I didn't really enjoy using them.

Keetha said...

Oh, Postcardy, that's soooo sad!!!

Keetha, I LOVE that! For years I have been in search of the music book that I used in elementary school. NOt mine in particular, but the one I recall songs from. Two songs in particlar, "Come and Hear the German Band (at the big parade) and "Dongoto" about a cat. I loved music class! And I loved those songs. I can still almost recall most of the words.
I tried contatcing the board of education to see if they could help, at least give me the name of the book. Nope.
Online sites like ebay, doesnt work b/c they of course dont list the songs. Its a fruitless search....

I love your books! I think it is soooo neat you have these. I have a collection of hymnals I love.

My kiddos last day was Friday. I'm not a teacher, but I'm giddy, cause I have built in all day housekeepers all summer (yes, my girls actually like to clean and do a fabulous job!)

Happy Thrifty Thursday!

I do remember well the last day of school from back in my teaching days. What a great feeling. I'm sure you have lots planned for your summer break.

Keetha said...

KBeau - - - my MAIN plan is to do lots of nothing.

And a trip to our beloved Wisconsin in July.

Gina - - - wanna send your girls my way for a couple days???? Hehehehehehehe

Yep ol' Alice is a popular man about this time of year :)

Those music books are great. I figured you got them at a thrift shop, but it's even better - they're from Family!

"Schools Out For Summer" I remember it well. My husband would always play this for our kids on the last day of school. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Have a wonderful summer.

Love your music books. I also think that it is cool that they have been in your family all this time.

Happy summer to you! I remember the feelings of being a teacher at the end of the year...

I loved your post. Old books are so interesting.

I love finding old books of any kind...but especially music books! Even better when they are 'in the family'.

I know you are thrilled to be out! Kids always think they are the happiest to be out...WRONG! Teachers are! And they won't understand that unless they grow up and become teachers themselves!

Enjoy your summer!

"Welcome Summer" has a great ring to it...right?

Love your books, they are so neat and I love the fact they were used by family members.

Have a much needed rest this summer and enjoy yourself!!

Since I retired my favorite time of year is when school starts back in the late summer...because I don't have to go!! Those family school books are so neat. In a few years the kids won't even know what a school book is due to technology...sad!

I seem to remember that we sang regularly throughout elementary school, there was even a piano in some teacher's rooms.

I love old books, but music books leave me cold. I had the most terrible memories of school's music classes. And when I tried to sing a lullaby to my firstborn, he said in a little voice: "Mom please don't sing"!

Enjoy your summer break!
Thank you for sharing your books. I love to look at old books and I'm always drawn to them.

I love that you posted the signatures inside the book too! School doesn't get out here until July 11th.. My tadpoles are then off till August 21. I wish that school was already out here in France!

OH MY GOSH, Keetha, I remember that "Let's Sing" program!!! WOW!
And the theme song instantly came to my mind... didn't it go something like "Let's sing, let's hear the rafters ring, with songs both sad and gay..."
Or am I thinking of some other song?
Anyway, thanks for jarring that lost memory!!

We had to turn our books in at the end of the year, too. When in 7th grade, a classmate left her HISTORY book on top of the car that carried Robert Kennedy to his hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. He actually SIGNED it, and had his secretary phone the girl to return it to her! She and her mom were honest, and reported to the school that they would like to buy the book, so they could keep the signature and book intact - the school actually REFUSED to sell it! A short time later, Robert Kennedy was assassinated. The mother then reported that the history book was 'lost', so they had to pay a fine. Geesh - and this was a Catholic School!!!

FIRST I MUST TELL YOU THANK YOU FOR BEING A TEACHER
I TAUGHT MY KIDS THAT THEY SPEND MORE TIME DURING THE WEEKDAYS WITH THEIR TEACHERS THEN THEY DO WITH US PARENTS AND THAT THERE TEACHERS ARE LIKE THEIR OTHER PARENTS DURING THE DAY. EVERY MONTH I MADE SURE TO GIVE HER TEACHER A "THANK YOU" GIFT. AND FOR HER SPECIALS LIKE GYM AND MUSIC AND SUCH AT CHRISTMAS I MADE SURE TO GIVE THEM A GIFT ALSO. I DONT THINK ENOUGH PARENTS REALLIZE HOW MUCH OUR TEACHERS DO!
WHEN WE WERE IN VICTOR COLORADO I FOUND A BOOK ON MANNERS THAT WAS TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS IN THE EARLY
1900's AND WOW HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED! I WISH MANNERS WERE AS IMPORTANT NOW AS THEY WERE BACK THEN, TO ME THEY ARE, I WAS RAISED BY MY GRANDPARENTS AND WAS TAUGHT WELL IN THE MANNER FIELD. I HAD HAILEY WRITE AN APPOLOGY LETTER TO HER ART TEACHER FOR BEING NAUGHTY IN CLASS ONE DAY AND THE TEACHER WROTE BACK THANKING US AND WROTE THAT,THAT WAS THE FIRST APPOLOGY LETTER SHE HAD RECEIVED IN OVER 10 YEARS! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!
SO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!!!!

Thank God Almighty! You are free at last!!! Keesha, my husband is retired from Ford Motor Company but drives a school bus...he has 2 weeks until he'll be singing "School's Out!" Along with you and Alice...LOL.
I love the old music books. And to think that others in your family shared them...awesome!

OH YAY! I love the last day of school, but then I love the first day of school also. Your books are wonderful. I remember singing in the classroom, but then, I was ALWAYS singing or whistling. I love old dictionaries. I should take your lead and post about my old dictionaries. Hmmmmm. Enjoy your summer!

Indeed you did grab them up; those music books are splendid!
The Music Hour books are particularly special. I don't remember books like that but I can imagine...
I used to love the clear, crinkly feel of book covers in Elementary school and for some reason, those books reminded me. Thank you!
