Many of you have asked where in the world I've been.

All I know is that after 7 plus years of blogging and a different lappy, which I don’t like, I seem to have lost my blogging fervor.

Someday, when you least expect it, I will post again.

For those of you still waiting I say thank you.

Meanwhile, I am rather prolific on twitter. Find me: @KeethaB

"Were You Born in a Barn?" Charm

.

When you were young did your mother ever shout "Close the door! Were you born in a barn!?!"

Mine did.

Meet Sadie. (Name changed to protect the innocent, and Sadie is not my mom.)

Sadie was not born in a barn, but she did live in one for part of her life.

Sadie was one of ten children. While all ten of them were still at home, their house burned.

Fortunately for them, no one was hurt. Also fortunately for them, they lived on a farm - - - so they just moved lock, stock, and barrel into the barn until the house could be repaired/rebuilt.

Sadie says they thought it was fun - - - like camping. She said her mom figured out some way to cook their meals, though Sadie can't quite remember how she did it. They all slept up in the hay mow.

I forgot to ask her if they had to share their barn home with any livestock.

I took the photo of this beautiful red barn and silo in Vernon County, Wisconsin. It is not Sadie's barn home, but we can always pretend, can't we?

Those were the days of self reliant people, God bless them.

yes, how I fuss when I have a minor inconvenience like frozen pipes or a modern appliance that quits. We have gotten quite cushy these days!!

Beautiful post. It reminds me of how to look back and be thankful of what we have now. ^_^ Thanks for sharing.

That is beautiful!!

I like the barn and the story is even better! I grew up on a farm and spent lots of time in the barn, but not living there. :)

Oh, yes, I heard my folks shout that many a time! They both grew up on farms in Nebraska, so I heard many old farm sayings. My dad's favorite way to wake us up was to shout, "The horses ran away!" Of course, it didn't matter that we only had horses for a few years. I love your red barn and Sadie's story. I wonder if her mother thought it was quite as much fun as she did.....

Beautiful barn and interesting story about Sadie. Yes, my mother used to ask if we were born in a barn. We used to twitter. Why didn't she know where we were born?

Sadie's story is so sweet. Thank you so much for sharing that. I'm imagining the warmth and security that they had sleeping in the hay...altogether after their home burned.
And for us, my mom's saying was, "THIS PLACE IS A PIGSTY(sp)!" whatever.

My Dad used to say that! Very neat story Keetha, I love how you write!
My Mom used to say that a lot of folks around us had nicer barns than houses...cause those dairy cows have to produce!
See ya soon!

The photo is a nice one - and the story is fascinating. They just don't make people like that anymore, do they? I STILL use that expression with my grandkids - of course most of them don't have a clue what a barn is!

I would think the barn experience might be fun for a night or two...but that is all. I've always wanted to try this http://www.reidsguides.com/t_h/t_h_schlafimstroh.html.

nice to meet your mom, she's a cutie! i bet she has some great stories to tell....i remember reading a book once where the family home burned and they all had to move into the barn....shoot, i can't remember the name of it though, or much more than that!

I say that to my 8-year-old grandson and he looks at me like I'm crazy. I'm not sure he's ever seen a barn other than in story books.

I STILL say that! I think we've grown sooooo comfortable in our homes that when the air is out or the dishwasher is broken, we can hardly stand our life! :) Maybe we should all live in a barn for a week!

I don't think my mom ever said it, but I know my grandma sure did! LoL!

"Sadie" looks like such a sweetie, God bless her heart!

Thanks for sharing w/ us at Barn Charm =)

Aw, bless "Sadie's" heart - now days, the Red Cross would be involved, etc., etc. Not saying that's a bad thing, but folks now are just too dependent on others. I bet "Sadie" can share some stories!

What a wonderful photo and an interesting story! Love the rolling hills and lots of trees and lush green fields surrounding the barn. Your friend sounds as though she's lived a very interesting life...at least when she was a child ;) Imagine living in a barn and sleeping in the hay mow..what wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing this with us! Have a wonderful day.

Hello and Good Wednesday Afternoon Keetha! You have captured one beautiful red charming barn and a very sweet post to top it off! Cool silo and all that beautiful green make a very pretty rural picture. And yes we can pretend, pretending is fun!

I had a friend from Ohio that used that phrase all the time. That's a nice view, I can almost feel the sun warming me.

Now then:

When you were young did your mother ever shout "Close the door! Were you born in a barn!?!"

Mine did.

Why yes, I heard my Mom say it more times than I care to say. My mother also grew up in the farm house where for a part of her life there wasn't any indoor plumbing. Brrr!

I guess that built fortitude to regulate one's need to go, or use the communal bed pan.

I appreciate our modern conveniences. :)
