Many of you have asked where in the world I've been.

All I know is that after 7 plus years of blogging and a different lappy, which I don’t like, I seem to have lost my blogging fervor.

Someday, when you least expect it, I will post again.

For those of you still waiting I say thank you.

Meanwhile, I am rather prolific on twitter. Find me: @KeethaB

Thrifty Vintage Thingies Thursday - Showing My Boopie!

.
It's THAT time again!!!! Vintage Thingies Thursday over at Coloradolady and Thrifty Thursday at Bloggeritaville.

Be sure you click on both of the icons or links above to check out what everyone else is posting.

Today I'm showing a little boopie!!

That's right, I said boopie.

Don't get all excited, my boopie isn't X-rated. You don't need to hide your eyes or block my blog from your computer. You can let your children in the room, and it's even OK if they look over your shoulder.

'Cause THIS is my boopie - - - - boopie stemware by Anchor Hocking.

Be careful, it isn't to be confused with candlewick. Boopie is boopie and candlewick is candlewick and never the twain shall meet. Candlewick is as candlewick does. Boopie is only skin deep. Or something like that.

Here's a little comparison for you. The stemware in the background is boopie, and the relish tray in the forground is candlewick. Can you see the difference?

The "bubbles" on the boopie are larger, have no spaces between them, and are located only at the base of the stem. There is a "twirl" design going down the stem to the bubbles.

The "bubbles" on the candlewick are smaller, have a distinct space between each, and are located on the rim of the dish. There is no design in the glass other than the bubbles.

This is yet another pattern of Anchor Hocking glass ware, it is just called bubble. This is not my piece, I simply found the photo online and wanted to include it here for comparison's sake.

When I was a child we had boopie glasses and sherbets just like this.

They came in soap boxes. I do believe we wouldn't have HAD any dishes if it wasn't for soap boxes. Oh I exaggerate! But it is not stretching the truth one little bit to tell you that LOTS of nice things came in soap boxes back in the BC days when I was born.

I loved these glasses and begged to use them at any excuse of a special event.

When my parents began to downsize their possessions, the boopie came to me. I have since added a few more pieces which I've found in antique shops.

Boopie isn't particularly valuable even today - - - but to me it is PRICELESS.

Your Boopie glasses are wonderful. I have seen a few of these before at estate sales, but did not know much about them...thanks for the lesson! Happy VTT and have a wonderful weekend.

Wow! How cool are these!? Beautiful! And thanks for the input on my pictures!

I have heard of Candlewick but never Boopie. Quite frankly, I like the Boopie better. I remember when they used to give things away in cereals, detergents, etc. Or character glasses for jam.

I have never paid much attention to glassware, but now I am going to watch for boopie. My family never had soap that came with glassware.

Oh dear, I have boopies and candlewicks and didn't even know it! My daughter drinks out of the boopies during holiday meals, and I serve rolls on the candlewick tray. Boopies. Never heard of them, and I think you made them up!
Happy VTT!

Very good explanation. I have some candlewick. A couple old plates from my mom and aunt.

I have seen these in the past, but did not know much about them. I loved hearing the history of yours and more details that I was not aware of. You can see a big difference in the two brands.

Hi Keetha,

Well thanks for the "Boopie and Candlewick" lesson. I love to learn something new!

I've never heard those names before but have seen that type of glassware--Boopie--who'd a thunk it!

Hey Girlfriend...

Love, love, LOVE this post! It was so informative too! I guess I knew there were differences between the "Boopie" (hehe!) and candlewick but hadn't ever seen them compared like that...very interesting! I have little glasses just like yours but they are sherry sized. I love them! I also love anything candlewick!

Thank you for sharing your pretties with us and giving us a little lesson too!

Love ya,
Chari

OMG-I had no idea about Boopie and Candlewick. However, I found 8 Boopies like your taller one at the GW about a month ago. At .38 a piece I had to have them. Just two weeks ago I went to an auction and bought 8 more large and 17 smaller juice glasses. You're right, they aren't particularly valuable. I think I paid about $5 for ALL of them, but I like them a lot.

It's funny, my grandmother saw them and said she received these as a wedding gift! Maybe her memory is failing? Soap boxes? Wedding gift? Too funny!

Debby@Just Breathe said...

I remember those. That is how you should collect, have a passion for it, not because it may be worth something someday!

those are adorable!

hi keetha,
thank you for all the prayers for amy going home to the Lord. it has been a very difficult time as my dh and i took care of her 42/7 in our home for 59 intense days....we had also taken care of her doing chemotherapy but this was when they said they cannot do any more. her body went fast but her heart and fight to live was very strong. she suffered so terribly. i had to go to the dr. today to help me because if i go to sleep and then wake up i forget amy has died and walk to the living room to check on her. my husband has to spend 30 minutes explaining to me amy has died....it is my mind trying to protect itself from accepting something that is so painful. it has been 11 days i think now.
THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL LESSON IN BOOPIE AND CANDLEWICK. i HAD NO IDEA AND I HAVE SEEN THEM BOTH.
ENJOYED CATCHING UP ON YOUR FUN POSTS...YOU ARE SO WITTY...I NEVER FORGOT YOU....I HAVE BEEN JUST A LITTLE BIT BUSY

I COMPLETELY understand the valuable/priceless thing. Me too - I own tons of priceless items. I hope my kids don't sell it in a yard sale for 25 cents one day.

The BOOPIE was cool. I appreciate the lesson that you added to this post (ever the teacher).

Thank you for the lesson of glassware! The glasses are nice, and priceless is the perfect word for items important for us.

I am like you where even though it's not valuable, to me, it's priceless. If I like the look of it and it's vintage or antique, it's special to me.

Now, thank you for the wonderful post and lesson on Boopie and Candlwick. Before you explained, I did see the difference in the photos. I do like the Boopie better. This was a valuable post. Thanks for sharing!

Boopie is way better than the candlewick, I think.

Enjoyed your post today and learned a lot! It is interesting to think back when you used to get dishes from things like soap boxes. I remember going to the gas station and getting glassware with a fill-up (and that was with a full service gas pump, window washer and oil check). We don't get that kind of service today!

Thank you for your kind note on my Blog......I love your "Bloopie" stemware. I have a plate with those lil bubbles, so now I know something about it. Thanks for your lesson, I learned something.

Happy Thrifty Thursday!

The things I learn from my friends in bloggerland!
I had never heard of boopie before & I'm still not sure why it's called that?
It's very pretty though & that's all that matters.

Do I have boopie or candlewick?--that is the question! :) I have just a little from my mother, and have no idea! This is my first visit--came from Leigh's. Nice to "meet" you!

Unknown said...

I never heard of that! And that was too funny and I think you're right...no glasses if it wasnt for soapboxes...and from the vintages ads I see, towels too I think!

Kristin - The Goat said...

I love a lesson in antiques especially when I believe that I'll actually remember the lesson :) I will remember this! I already knew half of the story. Thanks!

I think it would be a lot of fun to find dishware in soap. Why did that end anyway? Used to be that the toy surprise inside was for the homemaker, now it's just for kids.

What fun! Thanks!

You have educated me. I didnt know the differnce between a boopie and a candlewick. I didnt even know the names. Thank you for that. Now I'll be looking, both are beautiful, though as I age I see the beauty in larger "bubbles". At least thats what I try and convince myself.....
LOve you, Keetha! Thanks for linking up to Tales from Bloggeritaville Thrifty Thursday.

Boopie glass.....gotta get me some for the name alone but the glass draws me to it also. Thanks for the info and love the Boopie glasses.

Susan said...

Hello Keetha. Well, you taught me something new. I've seen both of these before but had no clue as to the difference. But you gotta love the name Boopie!

Unknown said...

Ah...Boopie! I have a pretty complete set of the green Boopie stemware, it was my Mom's, she got it when she was married. I have also been lucky enough to find some of the Red goblets in Boopie also, so I use the red and green at Christmas.....

I don't think I have ever heard it called boopie, but I do remember those from childhood, too.

Love your post and the lesson on these three types of glass.

I enjoy vintage glass and have been posting about my depression glass piece in the last several posts.
I don't have any boopie glasses, but have some bubble glass bowls and also some candlewick.

Boopie glasses. Boy, leave it to you to bring to my attention that there's just one more thing I need.
You know, I'd seen before and I think we even had some, but it wasn't until reading your post that I see them fondly.
They really are special, aren't they? So ....bubbly.

Marie said...

What a useful and interesting lesson! I never would have known the difference without your helpful boopiesms! What lovely collectibles.

Well I'm sure glad I popped over here today...first off, great informative post and I will now be heading to my friendly neighborhood thrift store to pinch all the boopie booty I can find. Secondly, love your wit...are you missing a brunette sister by chance? Lastly, I'm just in Fort Wayne....didn't realize there was such a sassy blogger just down the wilds of I69. :O) Do pop over to my place to say hello when you get a chance...

OK, inside peek in this pinball machine that I call a brain.

I started singing the song from Music Man Shipoopie (I don't KNOW why) and thought of you and your boopie. So now, your theme song is Shipoopie from The Music Man.

(I dunno, cause it rhymes?)

I saw Keetha's boopies! (snicker ;-)

I've never heard of Boopie and I'm so sure I've seen it and mistaken it for Candlewick. Thanks for the lesson! And can you imagine getting those pieces inside a box of soap?! Amazing.

I scanned all of these comments looking for someone to make the obvious connection here about the word "boopie." Thank you Laura @ the shorehouse. The very last one made me laugh. Therefore I don't have to make a joke now.
